About Us
The Portage Family Restaurant is proud to feature a comfortable and warm atmosphere, a full menu with delicious and healthy selections the whole family will enjoy. The Portage has been a family tradition for over 30 years in the beautiful city of Miramichi. Whether it’s a full hearty breakfast, a delicious lunch, or a wonderfully prepared dinner our food has become woven into the very fabric of our community, and we invite those whom are unfamiliar with us, to visit and see for themselves what so many of their neighbours rave about.
The Portage Restaurant, located on Route 11 has been a Miramichi landmark since it opened almost forty years ago, on September 4, 1969. The restaurant opened with fifteen employees, and was open from 7 am until 2am, seven days a week. Those hours of operation remained for almost fifteen years. When the bars and night clubs began staying open until 2am, the Portage began closing earlier so the staff would not have to work into the wee hours of the morning. The restaurant closed at midnight to serve the people who were travelling through the area, as unlike today, there were not a lot of places along Route 11 to stop.
Motor coach tours and other tourists make up a large portion of the summer business. The local business men and women, families, volunteer groups and organisations help keep the restaurant going year round. The menu has not changed much in the past few decades as the Portage continues to offer always popular, home-cooked meals. All soups are homemade and turkey and beef are roasted on site.
HOURS: The Portage opens every day at 6am and during the summer, closes at 9pm Monday and Tuesday; 10pm Wednesday – Saturday; and at 9pm on Sunday.
